We play ultimate. We workout. We wear costumes, pretty often. We dance to The Lion King.
Shoutout to Shep for capturing some of our best and weirdest moments!
First of all, we want to say that we are sooooo excited about this coming year and that we hope you are all enjoying your summers! As we head into the last month of break we want you all to start thinking about getting into ultimate shape, especially since our first tournament will be soon after we get back. We know that all of you have varying commitments and abilities to train and practice, so we have decided on a flexible baseline for working out in August. You should use the guidelines as a weekly checklist that we expect everyone to complete each week. We encourage you to go above and beyond these achievable basics! Attached are some ideas of workouts and exercises you all can use to fulfill the checklist.
Throughout August please complete:
We encourage you to supplement this with other workouts, whether that's playing Ultimate, hiking, biking, dancing, swimming, or whatever else makes you feel fit and happy. This way when we return to Swat we will be ready to make the most of our practices and tournaments. It's super important that we are all in good shape to avoid pesky injuries!
As a way of keeping in touch and keeping track of these preseason workouts, we are creating a group blog to share stories, photos, songs, recommendations, or whatever you want as a record of your workouts. We think this will be way more fun and motivating! We will also have a weekly poll set up, so we can keep track of how many moms are doing the weekly baseline.
Please upload entries at swarthmorewarmothers.tumblr.com and sign your name at the end! Select the 'Make your post' option and upload a picture, video, text or whatever you want. Please make sure to sign your name at the end of the post because otherwise you can't see who posted what. You don't need a Tumblr account to post either.
Can’t wait to see all of you soon!
Report your workouts here! Remember: two cardio, one strength and one sprint workout a week. You can also report additional workouts that don't fit these categories (yoga, playing Ultimate/tennis/soccer).
Hi Moms! Log your workouts here. The window is DECEMBER 12th to JANUARY 20th.
**NOTE** if your browser does not show the entire form, you can scroll down WITHIN the form to submit it.

To see what other people have done, click on "see previous responses" after you submit your form. I will also send out a link to the full googledoc that has aaaaalllllllll the responses once enough people log their workouts!
**note: depending on your browser, you may have to scroll down within the form to press the "Submit" button.
For those of you who don't know, I'm spending a month in Germany this summer (in Magdeburg, kinda near Berlin), and today I finally got to play some frisbee with the locals. :) This blog post chronicles the event:
After finding my way to the fields with public transit (which required speaking broken German with a nice woman on a bike and a grumpy woman at the tram stop), I put on my cleats and met Inga, one of the two girls at the practice. I say practice because it was a practice with the local team, Schleudertrauma (translation: whiplash). It was the most intense practice I have ever had and really awesome. We warmed up with straight, IO, and OI backhands and forehands, and then hammers (10 of each). Then we did soooo much shuffling (while staring at a specific target) and agility ladder stuff. I thought I was gonna die. Then we did this great deep drill where each person takes a turn hucking for the whole team, but sprinting in between hucks. The whole team had beautiful forehand and backhand hucks (I need to work on my flick hucks....) and there was no difference between the men and the women (always nice). It was a bit intimidating, but I felt challenged in all the right ways. Then (finally) we set up endzones and played 5-on-5 scrimmage, which was the most intense scrimmage I've ever played. They had three handlers and two poppers but with man defense, and no one stopped running. Ever. Also I'm pretty sure the stall count never got above 3. (although that could be because they say "stalling.... 1.... 2.....") It was beautiful ultimate where everyone on the team touched the disc every point and it made me realize how totally doable that is. :) I was also quickly reminded of the importance of sidelines and communicating on the field (in a language you can fluently understand...) :P After practice (which ended at 9pm, because it doesn't get dark here till 10:30 or so) they all thanked me for coming, and one of the guys on the team actually offered to drive me home (a big deal in Germany). They practice twice a week and there is another women's team practice tomorrow and a pickup game on Saturday. I'm in heaven (but my out-of-shape body isn't...).
To any incoming freshmen who might be reading this, I should just mention that joining the Swarthmore frisbee team my freshman year (after having not played a sport since middle school, and only having thrown a disc once or twice) has actually changed my life in a lot of wonderful ways. I have made some amazing friends, learned a ton, and never been happier. So come to the first practice -- you won't regret it. :)

Interesting question to consider in the recruiting season: which sport best prepares you for Ultimate?
Warmothers featured in Swarthmore College's online newspaper, the Daily Gazette: read this great article in which we compete with the nation's best! (Plus a mad shout out to Victor, who is awesome.)
Check out this article by Skyd magazine. Did any of us play club this summer? (BAHAHAHAHA NO RESEARCH.)
